International Business Practice Group
The international business practice group represents international companies and individuals doing business in the United States, with a principal emphasis on Hawai'i. This practice group consists of attorneys from nearly all of the Firm's practice areas. These attorneys have participated in many of Hawai'i's most prominent and complex real estate and corporate transactions, loan restructurings and workouts, acquisitions and dispositions, and litigation disputes on behalf of foreign or international clients.
The Firm is generally recognized in Hawai'i as a leader in representing Japanese investors. Several attorneys in the international business practice group previously lived in Japan for extended periods of time, a number attended school in Japan, and some worked in Japanese law firms as resident U.S. legal experts. The Firm also has the capability to advise and assist clients in the Japanese language. With the continuing strong predilection of Japanese for Hawai'i, the Firm anticipates that the practice group's combination of experience and expertise will continue to attract Japanese clients and will solidify the Firm's dominance in this area.
This practice group is also comprised of attorneys experienced in doing business in the People's Republic of China and Taiwan. It has been involved in a number of joint ventures and other investments in the People's Republic of China, including real estate and infrastructure development, telecommunications, and other commercial and industrial projects. The Firm has represented international clients in the successful construction and sale of an 800-unit apartment complex, the acquisition and sale of a mixed-use hotel, office and retail project site, and acquisition of an ownership interest in a paintbrush manufacturing plant. The Firm continues to maintain relationships with attorneys and business interests in China.
